What is Online Therapy?
Online therapy is a flexible, effective way to access professional mental health support from wherever you are. Also known as teletherapy, telehealth, or remote therapy, online therapy has been shown to produce the same quality of outcomes as in-person sessions — with the added benefits of privacy, convenience, and accessibility. Research consistently shows that online therapy produces significant improvements in mental health outcomes that persist long after treatment ends.
Whether you’re dealing with trauma, anxiety, grief, burnout, or relationship challenges, online therapy allows you to receive specialized, trauma-informed care without commuting, waiting rooms, or rigid scheduling. You choose where you’re most comfortable — and when works best for you.
Why Choose Online Therapy?
There are many reasons people choose online therapy over traditional in-person sessions. Some of the most common include:
- Privacy — You can work with a therapist who is completely outside your personal community, with no risk of running into them at the grocery store or having connections to your friends or family
- Convenience — No commute, no waiting room, and no need to navigate the world right after an emotional session
- Flexibility — Online therapy fits around your schedule, your caregiving responsibilities, and your life
- Comfort — Many people do their best therapeutic work from the safety and familiarity of their own home
- Accessibility — Online therapy removes geographic barriers, giving you access to specialized therapists regardless of where you live
My Telehealth Certification & Training
Not all therapists are equally prepared to provide effective online therapy. I hold a Clinical Telehealth Mental Health Provider certification, reflecting my commitment to delivering the highest standard of care in a virtual format. This certification covers the ethical, clinical, and technical considerations specific to online therapy — ensuring that every session is secure, confidential, and therapeutically effective.
In addition to my telehealth certification, I bring extensive specialized training in trauma-informed care, EMDR therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and somatic therapy, all of which can be delivered effectively through a secure online platform.
When you work with me online you are not being assigned to a random therapist or handed off to someone unqualified to work with your specific needs. You receive the same specialized, personalized care you would in person — from a therapist who knows your history, understands your goals, and is genuinely invested in your healing.
EMDR Therapy Online — Just as Effective as In Person
One of the most common questions people have about online therapy is whether specialized treatments like EMDR can really work virtually. The answer is yes — and research supports it.
I hold an EMDR certification through EMDRIA (the EMDR International Association), and have specific training and experience delivering EMDR therapy online. Not all therapists who offer EMDR are certified, and not all certified EMDR therapists are trained in online delivery. I am both — which means you receive the highest standard of EMDR care in a virtual format.
Online EMDR therapy uses secure video platforms and bilateral stimulation tools specifically designed for virtual delivery. Rather than following a light bar in a physical office, clients use screen-based visual stimulation, audio tones, or tapping — all of which have been shown to be equally effective in activating the brain’s natural healing process.
Online EMDR therapy is particularly well suited for trauma processing because it allows you to engage in deep therapeutic work from an environment you already feel comfortable in. For many trauma survivors, the journey to and from a therapist’s office — and the exposure to unfamiliar environments — can itself be activating. Online EMDR therapy removes that barrier entirely, allowing your nervous system to stay more regulated during the most important parts of the work.
The Unique Benefits of Trauma & PTSD Therapy Online
For people healing from trauma and PTSD, online therapy offers a distinct advantage that is often overlooked — you get to do the work from home.
This matters more than it might seem. Trauma therapy asks you to go to vulnerable, sometimes difficult places emotionally. After a powerful session, you may feel raw, tender, or emotionally open. In traditional in-person therapy, you have to gather yourself, walk out into public, drive home, and re-enter your daily life — often before you’ve had time to integrate what just happened.
With online trauma therapy, you can close your laptop and be home. Already home. You can take a few minutes to breathe, journal, make tea, or sit quietly before transitioning back into your day. Many clients report that this makes a significant difference in how well they integrate their sessions and how safe they feel going into deep therapeutic work.
Additionally for people healing from PTSD and complex trauma, the therapeutic environment itself matters. Being in a space that already feels safe — your own home, your own chair, your own familiar surroundings — can make it easier for your nervous system to stay regulated during difficult work. This is a genuine clinical advantage of online trauma therapy, not just a convenience.
What to Expect in Online Therapy Sessions
Online therapy sessions at Center of Balance Counseling are conducted through a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. Sessions feel very similar to in-person therapy — you’ll see each other clearly, connect naturally, and engage in the same depth of therapeutic work you would face to face.
To get the most from your online therapy sessions I recommend:
- Finding a private, comfortable space where you won’t be interrupted
- Using headphones for added privacy and better audio quality
- Having a stable internet connection
- Giving yourself a few minutes before and after each session to arrive and integrate

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Online Therapy?
Online therapy, also known as e-therapy, teletherapy, telehealth and remote therapy, is considered (and proven) to be just as effective as in person therapy, in some cases more It is therapy delivered through a virtual platform through a computer, tablet or smart phone. If you’ve ever used FaceTime or Skype, it is a very similar platform– except more secure and with a qualified therapist or counselor at the other end supporting you in addressing meeting goals, working on person growth, problem solving, and addressing mental health issues and emotional challenges.
How does a Teletherapy session work?
While it is possible to do teletherapy via email or phone, contemporary telemental health sessions typically use video chat. The therapeutic process is similar to in-person therapy. It usually begins with a few initial sessions during which the therapist and client get to know one another and discuss treatment goals. After that, the therapist may dig more deeply into the client’s issues, make recommendations for behavioral changes, and encourage the client to reflect on their emotions.
The therapist takes steps to ensure confidentiality. These include:
- Logging on from a private network
- Keeping their computer locked to prevent others from viewing the session
- Accessing therapy from an encrypted therapy platform call Simple Practice
- All information is stored on a HIPPA compliant software-also Simple Practice
How long does Teletherapy take?
Teletherapy is just like other forms of in person therapy. You will decide with your therapist what your goals are and then a treatment plan will be set up. Treatment can be short in duration, a few sessions or much longer. If you have more serious issues you want to work with, the process can take longer. The goal is always to support you in getting what you need in the shortest amount of time possible.
How much does Teletherapy cost?
The cost of therapy for all of services is the same please see https://centerofbalancecounseling.com/investment/. Insurance now will reimburse or pay for therapy depending on your individual plan.
