Individual Therapy — Healing From the Inside Out
Individual therapy at Center of Balance goes deeper than talking about your problems — it’s about genuine, lasting transformation that actually sticks. Rather than surface-level talk or another self-help approach, real change addresses why you’re stuck, releases the patterns that hold you back, and rebuilds your life from the inside out.
Through our work together, you’ll:
- Uncover the root causes beneath your struggles — the beliefs, nervous system patterns, and protective strategies keeping you trapped
- Develop a completely different relationship with your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors
- Heal from the deep patterns that have shaped your life
- Discover new possibilities and reclaim your sense of agency
- Step into your full potential with genuine confidence
Therapy isn’t just about learning techniques or thinking positively. In fact, real healing requires working with your nervous system, your body awareness, and your deeper emotional patterns. As a result, when you address what’s actually driving your struggles — not just the surface symptoms — everything begins to change.
How Individual Therapy Works:
Understanding Real Change
Many people come to individual therapy hoping that talking through their problems will fix them. Insight alone rarely creates lasting change. According to the American Psychological Association, psychotherapy is most effective when it addresses both cognitive and emotional patterns — which is exactly why my approach integrates nervous system and body-based work alongside traditional talk therapy.
The issue is that unprocessed trauma and deep emotional patterns live in your nervous system and body — not just in your thoughts. As a result, I use an integrated approach that combines psychological insight with nervous system and body-based work. Rather than just talking about your problems, we actually resolve them at the level where they're stored.
Your Mind: Understanding the beliefs, stories, and patterns that shape your experience. Developing new perspectives and possibilities.
Your Body: Reconnecting with physical sensations, releasing held tension, and learning to listen to your body’s wisdom. Your body carries important information about safety and danger that your thinking mind often overrides.
Your Nervous System: Calming the hypervigilance, reducing reactivity, and creating genuine safety at the physiological level. This is the foundation for all other change.
Your Emotions: Processing emotions that have been suppressed, avoided, or overwhelming. Moving from emotional reactivity to emotional resilience.
What to Expect in Individual Therapy
Most importantly, we'll build safety and establish trust. Therapy can only work when you feel genuinely safe with your therapist.
As we move into active therapy, the work becomes more tailored to your specific needs. Depending on what you’re dealing with, I might use:
- IFS (Internal Family Systems) for working with different parts of yourself and internal conflict
- EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) for processing trauma and distressing memories
- Somatic therapy for reconnecting with your body and releasing held tension
- Nervous system regulation techniques for calming your system and building resilience
- Relational work for improving how you connect with yourself and others
Each modality has its own dedicated page where you can learn more. In sessions, I use whichever approaches will be most helpful for your particular situation.
You're always in control. If something doesn't feel right or isn't working, we talk about it and adjust. Your comfort and safety come first.
Why This Approach to Individual Therapy Works
Research-Based: Everything I do is grounded in neuroscience research and evidence-based therapy approaches. This isn’t theory—it’s proven to work.
Addresses the Root: Instead of managing symptoms, we work with what’s actually causing them. This creates lasting change, not temporary relief.
Honors Your Resilience: The ways you’ve coped, protected yourself, and survived have been brilliant adaptations. Therapy honors that resilience while helping you evolve beyond what once protected you.
Meets You Where You Are: I don’t have a one-size-fits-all approach. Your therapy is tailored to you—your history, your needs, your pace, and your goals.
Integrates Body & Mind: Real healing happens when you work with your whole system. This is why body-centered, nervous system work is so powerful.
Common Questions About Starting
Individual Therapy
How often should I come?
Most people benefit from weekly sessions, especially early on. Some people do bi-weekly once they’re further along. We’ll figure out what works best for you.
How long does therapy take?
It depends on what you’re working with and how deep you want to go. Some people see significant shifts within a few weeks. Deeper healing often takes several months or longer. We’ll check in regularly about progress and what feels right.
Will it feel awkward?
Many people feel nervous before their first session. That’s completely normal. Most people find that the first conversation feels surprisingly natural and relieving.
Can I do this online?
Yes. Online therapy is just as effective as in-person, especially for trauma work. Many people actually find it easier to access therapy online and from the comfort of their own home.
What if I’ve tried therapy before and it didn’t work?
Different approaches work differently. If previous therapy didn’t help, it might have been the fit, the approach, or the timing. My work integrates body-based and nervous system approaches that sometimes get better results than traditional talk therapy alone.
How much does individual therapy cost?
Individual therapy rates vary depending on your insurance coverage and payment preference. I accept Aetna, First Choice Health, Providence, and Pacific Source insurance in Oregon and Washington. Aetna is accepted in Georgia, New Jersey, and Florida. If you have a different insurance provider I can work with you as an out-of-network provider and provide a superbill for reimbursement. For clients without insurance I accept HSA/FSA payments. For full details visit my Rates & Insurance page.
Ready to Begin Your Individual Therapy Journey?
You don’t have to figure this out alone. You don’t have to white-knuckle your way through life or accept that “this is just how I am.”
Real change is possible. And it starts with one conversation.
Individual Therapy Online
I work entirely online — all individual therapy sessions are conducted remotely through fully HIPAA-compliant, secure software. Whether you’re at home, managing work, or simply don’t have time for commuting, you can access professional care that fits your life.
Online individual therapy is just as effective as in-person work — and what I’ve discovered is that most people feel genuinely safer and more open to deep healing when they’re at home. I’m Telehealth for Mental Health certified and have trained extensively to bring my somatic, trauma-informed approach into the online space.
